York a Gem of a City, Part 1.
By Mark on June 27, 2008
York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England, and has the rivers Ouse and Foss going through the city. The city is rich in history, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is nearly 2,000 years old.

This is an picture of York taken from Google Earth of York.
The city was founded in AD 71 by the Romans and was called as Eboracum which became one of the two capitals of all Roman Britain. Constantine the Great, was also associated with the city. Septimus Severus run the entire Roman Empire from city of York.
When the Anglo-Saxons moved in and took over the city, they renamed it as Eoferwic, and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria. When the Vikings defeated the Anglo- Saxons in 866, they took over the city and renamed it as Jórvík, and this city became the capital of a large kingdom in the north of England. Around the year 1000, the city became known as York.
Richard II wanted York to become the capital of England, but before he was able to do it he was removed from the thrown. Once the Wars of the Roses had finally ended York was made the Council of the North and was then deemed as a capital of the North of England. By the 1660’s York started as a capital to decline and slow down. Nevertheless, York was still the main town of Yorkshire. York is also one of the main provinces in the religious community with it’s stunning catherdral and of course the Archbishop of York lives in the city, it has a connection with Canterbury, Kent, where the Archbishop of Canterbury works.

The main core of the city of York, which is based inside the city walls, is the main attraction, where tourists from all over the world come to visit historic capital. And with it’s stunning attractions of the York Minster, The Walls, York Museum, York Dungeon, Jorvik centre, River Ouse and Foss and the Shambles, and many more attractions, with many pubs, restaurants, threatres, Horse racing and it’s own football team York is the city of Entertainment and should be visited.

If anyone is wondering whether New York was named after York, the answer would be “not quite”. It was actually named after King James II when he was the Duke of York. (Wikipedia).

My wife and I’ve been to York twice, first as a day trip in 2007 then for a four day stay last year around Easter. It wasn’t long enough believe me !!
Friendly people, great pubs selling great ale, fantastic restaraunts “catering” to all “tastes”, you must try the exhibition Hotel on Bootham, really welcoming. Didn’t get to see everything so we’re coming back again this year and we can’t wait. Just wish our home town of Bolton was half as good as York, and coming from a Lancastrian that’s high praise indeed.

many many thanks Trevor, just arrived back today. Three nights, fantastic weather, and just so much to do and see you are right, there are very few cities around today, as good as York. But I do also recommend a visit to Chester as well, if you like York, you will love Chester to.
