Wimbledon and Tennis come to V.T.

By Mark on June 30, 2010

So we move through spring towards a british summer, the summer sports come out to play, this is about the most wellknown of british summer sporting advents, it is tennis and the Wimbledon Championships, held at the All England Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon since 1877. This is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is generally considered the most prestigious. This happens to be one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, and amazingly it is still played on the game’s original surface, grass, which gave the game of lawn tennis its name. The actual event takes place over a two week period in late June and early July, and consists of the ladies’ and gentlemen’s singles final, scheduled respectively for the second Saturday and Sunday. Each year, five major events are contested, as well as four junior events and four invitational events.

But it is very special watching these talented tennis players playing at wimbledon and on grass as nowadays you have the hard court in the Australian Open and clay court in the French Open, both these tournements continue after Wimbledon in the calendar year and there is also the hard court in the US Open which follows later in the year. Both men and women need to train on grass courts and for the men, you have the grass court AEGON Championships, also in London, as well as the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, serve as respective warm-up events, and for the women, there is the AEGON Classic in Birmingham and 2 joint events, the UNICEF Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and the AEGON International Eastbourne serve as warm-up events to Wimbledon.

But what is so special about the English game of tennis, well if you don’t know by now it is the traditional eating of strawberries and cream, drinking Pimm’s spritzers, royal patronage and a strict dress code for competitors. In 2009, the Centre Court at wimbledon was fitted with a retractable roof this was to help to prevent rain from delaying and interrupting Centre Court matches during the tournament and living in Britiain, it does have a tenderancy to rain over wimbledon, even though this year does not seem as bad as other years, with rain.
