Where do Goldfish come from and who are they closely related to.

By Mark on February 10, 2010

One of my major hobby’s is being an a aquarist, I am very intersted in different types of fish, where as more and more people are becoming interested in Marine and Tropical fish I am interested in cold, freshwater fish. There are loads of differents types of Goldfish and Koi’s out there, as well as the Carp, Sturgoen, Sterlet, the Orfe and Tench, but there are many many other species including, the Stickleback, the Rudd. It is so relaxing just sitting on my sofa, watching the fish swim by, I do also have newts aswell, they are fun to watch to. But it is not really very wise to mix newts and goldfish together, as the newts will often screte that could actually harm the goldfish and the gold fish if big enough would eat newts, so best to keep apart, but also goldfish are messy and the amonia would harm the newts to. ut of course it is up. So has an hobbyist I would like to write about Goldfish, so here we go, here is an introduction video from Youtube, enjoy.

How many of you out there know where goldfish come from and what type of fish they are related to. Well most people today will go to an aquarium shop and buy a goldfish. But did you guys know that goldfish actually are related to the Prussian Carp, even though alot of people will still say it belongs to the Crucian carp. But new science has aqctually proven that it is fromthe Prussian carp family.

This species of fish comes from Siberia in Russia and Asia. It was about one thousand years ago when the Chinese, actually started to domesticate prussian carp, by noticing that some of these fish were very stunning in colour and not just the yellowy, silver. The difference between Goldfish and the Crucian carp are these facts taken from Wikipedia, they are:* C. auratus has a more pointed snout while the snout of C. carassius is well rounded.
* The wild form of the Goldfish (C. gibelio) often has a grey/greenish color, while crucian carps are always golden bronze.
* Juvenile crucian carp (and tench) have a black spot on the base of the tail which disappears with age. In C. auratus this tail spot is never present.
* C. auratus have fewer than 31 scales along the lateral line while crucian carp have 33 scales or more.
* C. carassius has 28 to 29 fine denticles on the posterior edge of the last unbranched spiny ray of the dorsal fin, while C. auratus has 10 to 11 irregular denticles.
Now another thing that you guys may not know is at first when goldfish became pets, the Chinese, who had been breeding dogs before, finally started to breed goldfish. But these fish were only for the rich minnority, as back in those days people could not afford to buy them or even aquariums for the fish. But as time as progressed goldfish have now become cheaper and easier to look after.
