This is a post about the Scottish city of Aberdeenor  Aiberdeen, in Scottish Gaelic it is said as Obar Dheathain, it  is Scotland’s third most populous city and one of Scotland’s 32 local government council areas. The official population that was estimate in 2008 is 210,400 people, gosh that is alot of people. Some cities and towns actually have nicknames, but sometimes these names are alittle bit odd, for example the city of Aberdeen, is also known as the Granite City, the Grey City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. So how did this city getg her nicknames, well it goes back to the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, this was when the ciites  buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, whose mica deposits sparkle like silver.

Since the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970′s, they discovered that Aberdeen had a long, sandy coastline. There have also been other nicknames, the Oil Capital of Europe or the Energy Capital of Europe. Due to archaeology, it has now been proven that people have inhabited Aberdeen, since at least 8,000 years ago, when prehistoric villages lay around the mouths of the rivers Dee and Don.

Looking at the history of this city, it appears that in 1319,  Aberdeen went on to receive a Royal Burgh status from Robert the Bruce, this then transformed Aberdeen economically. Together with the cities two universities, the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, and the Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992, this made Aberdeen the educational centre of the north-east. Sadly though like alot of cities who started of with there  traditional industries, like here in Aberdeen where, fishing, paper-making, shipbuilding, and textiles have been overtaken by the oil industry and Aberdeen’s seaport. Plus this city also has a Heliport which is very busy and has become one of the busiest commercial heliports in the world and the seaport is the largest in the north-east of Scotland.

The city also hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major international event which attracts up to 1000 of the most talented young performing arts companies.
