Now, this city, has got to be the place to visit, if you like haunted or paranormal things happening, as it is labeled “The most haunted city in America” by paranormal enthusiasts, they claim that there are some haunted hot spots in Alton, such as McPike Mansion and other structures. Now it is alot of these structures were built on foundations of stone, that had been taken from the former Civil War prison, after it was abandoned. During the time of the Civil War, the Confederate prisoners had suffered severe overcrowding, and many of them died during a smallpox epidemic. There are regular “ghost tours” in the city, and, Alton has many a television crew, visiting, hoping to film proof of the paranormal, which is supposed to happen in the city.
