Welcome to the 4th largest Island in the world and an African, nation the Republic of Madagascar.

By Mark on July 23, 2009

This is my post about Madagascar or Republic of Madagascar it is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island is the fourth-largest island in the world, and is home to 5% of the world’s plant and animal species, of which more than 80% are endemic to Madagascar. Theses plants range from the lemur infraorder of primates, the carnivorous fossa, three bird families and six baobab species. Two thirds of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. Also Madagascar used to be known as the Malagasy Republic and in French it was also known as the République malgache.

The capital city of Madagascar is Antananarivo and it happens to be the largest city on the Island. The French will also say it’s French colonial name which is Tananarive or the shorthand form Tana.
The larger urban area which surrounds the city, is known as Antananarivo-Renivohitra (“Antananarivo-Capital”), is the capital of the Analamanga region and of the Antananarivo autonomous province.
Antananarivo is situated in the center of the island length-wise, and 145 km (90 miles) away from the eastern coast. The city occupies a commanding position, being built on the summit and slopes of a long and narrow rocky ridge, which extends north and south for about 4 km (2 mi) and rising at its highest point to about 200 m (660 ft) above the extensive rice plain to the west, although the town is at about 1,275 m (4,183 ft) above sea level.
To learn more about the city and Madagascar please refer to the links at the bottom of this page. The pictures and video have been taken from Google Earth, Panoramio and Youtube. Some information has been provided by Wikipedia.
