By Mark on December 15, 2009

This is my post about the small island country of Sri Lanka , this Island is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, also known Ceylon, but before 1972 it was then known as Taprobane in ancient times, you will find Sri Lanka about 31 km or 19.3 mi, off the southern coast of India. It is at present home to around twenty million plus people.

So being where it is in the Indian Ocean, it has become one of the most important pathways for the naval ships and commericial ships to go between India, Sri Lanka and other countries in Asia. Sri Lanka is quite famous for being the nation that produces and export tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon – which is native to this Island country. Also due to it’s natural beauty this country is a very popular place to visit, it has tropical forests, gorgeous beaches and wonderful looking landscapes, being a Island that has rich cultural heritage, this makes Sri Lanka a very popular place tourist‘s.

Sri Lanka is also a very popular place for buddhist, as buddhism been around thousands of years, but also Hinduism, so used alot in this nation. The Sinhalese community happens to be the largest majorityof the population; but there are the Tamils, who are mainly found in the north and east of Sri Lanka, and they  form the largest ethnic minority. Like most nations nowadays you will find that there are many other forms of communities and religions and Sri Lanka is much the same, their other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the indigenous Vedda people.

The capital city is Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, which is found on the south-western part of the Island.  It is a popular city to stay in, with plenty to do and see. Also known as Sri Jayawardenapura or Kotte it is the administrative capital of Sri Lanka. You will find this city not to far away from the commercial capital Colombo and for some strange reason it is often called New Capital territory. The Parliament of Sri Lanka has been based there since the formal inauguration of its new building on 29 April 1982. Sri Lanka has been ruled by many different nations including Portugal, Netherlands and the British Empire. Sri Lanka was also a very  important base for Allied forces in the fight against the Japanese Empire. during the year of 1948, nationalist political movement arose in the countrywanting to have their own independance and politics and the British, finally agreed after peaceful negotiations in 1948.
