VT News – Gustav, Tinsley Towers & Street View

By Nick on August 30, 2008

This week, I’ve been visiting some other Google Earth blogs to see what our fellow virtual trippers have been up to.

Hurricane Tracking

Last week, I wrote about how you can watch the weather in Google Earth. Well, how about watching a hurricane? Frank has written “Track Hurricane Gustav in Google Earth” on the Google Earth Blog and Keir has written Hurricane Gustav Tracking on Google Maps on Google Maps Mania. I had a look at the Gulf of Mexico myself, and it’s one mean looking hurricane!

Demolition of the Tinsley Cooling Towers

Alex of Google Sightseeing has written about two concrete cooling towers in South Yorkshire, England. The iconic Tinsley Towers were demolished recently, although one tower withstood the explosions. What made this especially interesting was the towers were standing next to a major motorway, in fact, just 12 meters away! The towers no longer loom over the busy road below, but you can still see them in Google Earth.

Google Street View hits Europe

For those of you who don’t know, Google Street View is a part of Google Maps, but instead of photos taken from space, it shows 360 degree photos taken on the ground by Google employees who drive around cities in cars and vans. It’s already huge in the U.S, and Virtual Globetrotting reported that Google Street View was expanding into Europe back in July.

When Google Street View came to Tokyo in early August, it caused quite a stir. Many Japanese felt their privacy had been invaded, and pictures such as these have now been removed.

U.K residents can either look forward to, or fear, Google coming to take snapshots of their homes in the very near future. The BBC has reported that Google has the “go ahead” to launch in the UK under the condition that they blur out faces and license plates.
