Virtual-Tripping visits Formentera the smallest of the main Balearic Islands, Spain, Europe.
By Mark on June 20, 2010
Welcome to my post on the island of Formentera, it is smallest and southernmost island of the Illes Pitiüses group, which are Ibiza and Formentera and both of these islands belong to the Balearic Islands, (Spain). Formentera is 19 kilometres (12 mi) long and is located approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi) south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. Because it is a small island you will find that the major villages are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola and La Savina. Not so long ago you could only get to this island from Ibiza by ship, but as tourism has grown, more and more tourists can now get to Formentera, from mainland Spain with regular ships. Towards the north of the island, there is a smaller island known as Espalmador, this island is separated by a shallow sandbar, now they say that if you find the tide is low, then it is possible to walk towards this island from Formentera, through the water, it has also become a popular stopping point for those in yachts heading between Ibiza and Formentera. Formentera comprises one municipality, also called Formentera, and has a population of 7,461 (2002). Its land area is 83.24 square kilometres (32.1 sq mi).
Like alot of places in the summer months you will hear different types of language like Italian, Spanish and German, but the local dialect of Catalan is spoken in Formentera, while the official languages are Catalan and Spanish. Finally for all you nude sunbathers out there, the island of Formentera is well known for its many pristine beaches and the fact that nude sunbathing is allowed on most of its beaches, so enjoy.
