By Mark on August 29, 2009

Welcome to New Caledonia the French Island located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. Now there is a mainland island and then there’s the Loyalty Islands and several smaller islands, the name of the main island is known as Grande Terre. The land area of New Caledonia is 18,575.5 square kilometres (7,172 sq miles). The currency is the CFP franc and the capital and largest city on the island is Nouméa.
The capital city Nouméa, happens to be the seat of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (formerly the South Pacific Commission), an international organization.
Because this these island are non-self-governing territories, New Caledonia has been included on the United Nations List, this is to do with the United Nations Committee on Decolonization. Around 2014 to 2019, New Caledonia will decide wether to stay within the French Republic or move on to become their own independant state, it will be decided during the referendum.
