Tokyo, Japan: The Electric City

By Mark on August 6, 2008

I am writing this post for the Japan Blog Matsuri, a blogging carnival in which people write about Japan. This month’s theme is “First Impressions of Tokyo“. I have been to Japan, but never to Tokyo and I always wondered what it would be like. So after some research into the city this is what I came up with.

The capital city of Japan, Tokyo, is situated on the Kanto plain, on east-central Honshu Island. The population of the city in 2007 was 12,790,000. It is a very modern city with a lot of futuristic sights, for example, large televisions on the front of buildings and lots of different types of electrical appliances to see in the shops. The city used to be known as Edo during the Shogan reign and it was a military government. But by 1868 when the city became the imperial capital the name was then changed to Tokyo. Being one of the largest, modern day cities in Japan, it become the main centre for government, commerce and industry. The pictures below show you where Japan is and where Tokyo is. Japan is a very crowded country and with the population of Tokyo heading towards 13 million people you can now understand why the city keeps growing and also why companies in the city have become world renowned.

The city was devastated by an earthquake in 1923 and during World War 2, Tokyo was bombed by the Americans. The main landmarks in the city are the Buddhist temples and shrines, as well as japanese gardens and the Imperial Palace. Tokyo is also the country’s leading educational centre with over a hundred universities and colleges, numerous museums, libraries and art galleries and it has light and heavy, diverse industry. With plenty of hotels and hostels, the city has accommodation pretty much anywhere, restaurants, bars, clubs, shops galore, stunning views and scenery. You really can’t go wrong. In my eyes this city is called the electric city because pretty much anything electrical comes from Tokyo and other Japanese cities. It is like walking into a wonderland of electrical items. The electrical town near Akihabara is a must see if you are into electrical gadgets.
