By Mark on July 24, 2010

Welcome to one of the most exciting hot spots in the world it is the Great Barrier Reef, it is the world’s largest reef system and is made up from over 2,900 individual reefs, plus 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres or 1,600 mi over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres or 133,000 sq mi. You will find the reef in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia. Amazingly you can actually see the Great Barrier Reef from outer space, it is actually the world’s biggest single structure, which has been made by living organisms. The actual structure of the reef has been formed by billions of tiny organisms, which are known as coral polyps. Why this reef is so well-known and very well visited is because you can find such a wide variety of life, it has also been selected as a World Heritage Site, this happened back 1981.

The television network CNN labeled it as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland. There is a Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, that this park actually helps to keep the reef protected and stops humans from fishing and also prevents over tourism, giving the reef time to show oit’s true colours. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.

Now like many natural places, the Great Barrier Reef has been the home to Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, because of this it has become a very important part of local groups’ cultures and spirituality. The major touristic part of the reef are the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions, this is where the majority of tourists will go to see the reef. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating AU$ 1 billion per year. But even though it is so touristic, we still need to keep in mind, that this isnature and it must always be preserved this reef to keep life going in the seas.
