This is the famous European port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands or Holland.

By Mark on August 26, 2009

This is a post about the south-western city of the Netherlands(Holland), situated in the province(county) of South Holland, Rotterdam The municipality is the second largest in the country (after Amsterdam), with a population of 584,046 as of January 2007. Now the port of Rotterdam is supposed to be the largest port in Europe and because of that it is the busiest port as well. But the good old Chinese, decided they wanted a bigger and busier port, so they created it. The Rotterdam port was the largest between 1962 to 2004, when Shanghai took over.

I wonder how many of you guys actually new that the name Rotterdam derives from a dam in the Rotte river. Also Rotterdam is situated on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas (‘New Meuse’), which leads on to the Rhine and Meuse rivers.
The population taken back in 2007 happened to be 584,046.

Now the original name for Rotterdam was actually a dam on the Rotte and so this will now give you a clue into this cities name. For example rotte or rotta, as it was then known, from rot, ‘muddy’ and a, ‘water’, thus ‘muddy water’), this was around the date of 900, around 1150 there was a large flood which caused the construction of dikes and dams, along the northern banks of the present-day Nieuwe Maas and 1260, they built hoogstraat (‘High Street’) and this is mainly how the city began.
There is alot to do in this city including pubs, bars, nightclubs, shops, restaurants, hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast, sporting events, parades and carnivals etc etc. It is a top city to visit and enjoy, so if you have a free weekend go to Rotterdam for a break.
