This is my own Virtual Trip around Aberdeen, Scotland, U.K.

By Mark on August 11, 2009

This is a post about the Scottish city of Aberdeen. This city happens to be the third most populous city in Scotland and is one of 32 local government council areas. The population is estimated at 202,370. I bet you did not know that this city has numerous nicknames for example Aberdeen is known as Granite City, the Grey City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. Someof these nicknames come through old stories ie in the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, Aberdeen’s buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, whose mica deposits sparkle like silver. Plus the city also has one of the longest sandy coasts in Scotland. On a beautiful day it is gorgeous.
Aberdeen is also known as Oil Capital of Europe or the Energy Capital of Europe and that has been ever since they found the North Sea Oil in the 1970s. Alot of the areas around the city have been there for least 8,000 years and some of the prehistoric villages, lye around the mouth of the rivers Dee and Don.
This Scottish city has actually managed to win the Britain in Bloom competition a record breaking ten times and also hosts some amazing events ie the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major international event which attracts up to 1000 of the most talented young performing arts companies.

In the year of 1319, the city of Aberdeen received Royal Burgh status from Robert the Bruce, it transformed the city econmically and brought two universities, the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, and the Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992, making this city the main educational centre of the north-east.

The oil industry as taken over when it comes to business in the city. The traditional industries of fishing, paper-making, shipbuilding, and textiles have started to slip away due to the oil. But did you know that the city still has a seaport, Heliport and it is one of the busiest commercial heliports in the world and the seaport is the largest in the north-east of Scotland.
