Now welcome to Torbay, this is a east-facing bay which includes a natural harbour, and is located to the western most end of Lyme Bay in the south-west of England, it is situated roughly midway between the major cities of Exeter and Plymouth. Torbay is also a Part of the ceremonial county of Devon, it was made an unitary authority on April 1, 1998. The Tourist authorities will often say to ou that this is the English Riviera, it is because Torbay has beautiful looking beaches and has a mild climate; it is a very popular area with holiday makers.
You will find that there are three main towns around the bay, they are Torquay in the north, Paignton in the centre, and Brixham in the south, these towns have emerged into three mains towns and have swallowed up over the years the villages and towns such as St Marychurch, Cockington, Marldon, Churston Ferrers and Galmpton.
But Torbay is actually bordered by the South Hams which is a local government district on the south coast of Devon to the south and west, and by Teignbridge to the north. There are closer smaller towns and they are Totnes and Dartmouth in the South Hams Newton Abbot and Teignmouth in Teignbridge. But it really is very beautiful in Torbay and it’s surrounding area, with hills, countryside, sea and beaches, there is plenty to do and see in Torbay and her neighbours and the wildlife is nice to see. But if you are a sailor, then Torbay is the place to be.
Torbay is twinned with Hameln in Lower Saxony, Germany (since 1973), and Hellevoetsluis in the Netherlands (since 1989).
