Welcome to my post on the French territorial islands of Wallis and Futuna Islands, they are  a Polynesian French island territory, but these islands are nothing to do with French Polynesia.  You will find the islands of Wallis and Futuna, they are quite close to the very opposite western end of Polynesia, which is located  in the South Pacific between the island of Tuvalu to the northwest, Rotuma of Fiji to the west, the main part of Fiji is to the southwest,  and the  Tonga islands are towards the southeast, and island of  Samoa is to the east, the New Zealand-associated state of Tokelau to the northeast and to a more distant north the Phoenix Islands, (Kiribati).

If you were to measure the actual  land area of the Wallis and Futuna island , it will come to is 264 km2 or 164 miles roughly and the population of the island is about 15,000.  The largest and the capital city is known as  Mata-Utu and the population back in 2003 was 1,191. This city is found on the Island of Wallis (ʻUvea), it is situated in the district of  Hahake, and it is also the capital. This city is quite like most cities, but you will find it is well-known for the Matâ’Utu Cathedral, which is a French national monument. There are also plenty of places to visit if you are hungry or thirsty, several restaurants, hotels and the post office, the palace of the King of Uvéa. Plus if you are intersted in archaeological sites: there are two quite close by, they are known as  Talietumu and Tonga Toto.  Just outside the city or town you will find a police station and shopping mall.

The Wallis and Futuna islands are made up of three main volcanic tropical islands, there are also small islands known as islets, and is split into two island groups that lie about 260 km apart, they are Wallis Islands (Uvea) in the northeast, and Hoorn Islands (Futuna Islands) in the southwest, including Futuna Island proper and the mostly uninhabited Alofi Island.Since 2003 Wallis and Futuna has been a French overseas collectivity (collectivité d’outre-mer, or COM). Between 1961 and 2003, it had the status of a French overseas territory (territoire d’outre-mer, or TOM). What a fascinating, interesting and entertaining country to visit, looks and sounds great.
