This is a post about the former African President, Nelson Mandela.

By Mark on June 11, 2010

As the football World Cup starts in South Africa, I thought it would be advisible to write a post about the great man himself and the former President of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, he was born on the 18 July 1918, in Mvezo, Union of South Africa, he was to serve has the President of South Africa between 1994 to 1999. He also became the first ever South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. But before this happened, Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).

But in 1962, Mandela was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and because of this he was to be sentenced to life in prison. He ended up in prison for 27 years and the majority of that time was spent on Robben Island. Then on the 11th February 1990 Mandela was released from prison, this lead him to take the lead of his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation. Even he had made it all this way, their were still many people who were sceptical about him and his policies, and this made things quite difficult at times for Mandela, but he managed to get the country moving in the right way. Mandela is often known as Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela’s clan.

Nelson Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, he had to work very hard to get them, and he did not do want he did to recieve the award, he did it to get black and white people to get on and live together.
There are still many problems in South Africa, with poverty still causing many disputes in poorer areas of the country, but hopefully the football World Cup, will bring in more finance to the economy.

It was down to Mandela that the Rugby World Cup in France, on the 7th September – 20th October 2007, where South Africa became the World Champions, beating England by 15 -6 at the Stade de France, St-Denis.
So many South Africans love Nelson Mandela, a lawyer, an anti-apartheid activist, a President, a husband, a father and a friend, what a man. Lets hope this football World Cup will be as good for South Africa, as winning the rugby World Cup in 2007. Well done to a Great Man.
