The Worlds Golden Boot ITALY The Mediterranean Wonderland
By Mark on June 9, 2008
Italy one of Europes most southern mediterranean countries. With it’s beautiful blue skies, sea and golden beaches, Italy is a must for the tourist. Italy is surrounded by many islands with the two main ones of Sardinia
and Sicily and around seventy other smaller islands in the seas. And due to the Roman Empire the sites of Italy are fantastic. Italy is a very mountainous country with the Alps which forms the northern border and various ranges of the Alpennies, which runs through the full length of peninsula. The country does also have some active volcanoes which can cause problems, but they really are amazing if you get to visit the mountains. They are Vesuvius, near Naples, and Etna and Stromboli. In the Northeastern area of the lowlands, at Po Valley, this area is very populated due to the agriculture and the industrialization. Italy has a very Mediterranean climate, but up in the north of the country you will find it colder and wetter, with heavy snow at times due to being close to the Alps. But in central and southern Italy it can get very hot, great for sunbathers.

This is a picture taken from Google earth of Italy and the surrounding islands.
The history of Italy goes way way back to a time than man forgot 753 BC, when the Roman Empire began. And it reached it’s peak as an Empire in the years of 100 AD, only finally to collapse in the years of the 400s AD. Although the eastern Roman Empire, which was called the Byzantine Empire lasted 1000 years. In the middle ages Italy began to split in to tiny states, these states began an amazing revival of Italy bringing Art and Learning to the Country this was called the Renaissance. And during the 14th and 16th century the beautiful cities of Florence(Firenze), and Venice(Venezia), testify to this existance. In 1861 Italy became a United Kingdom, although the Papal Territories which were owned by the Roman Catholic’s did not join until 1870. But the pope and his authorities were very upset and fought for many years to have their own independant state to which in 1929, the Vatican City was set up in the capital city of Roman and became an independant state. One of the most smallest countries in the world. During World War One (1914 – 1918), Italy joined forces with Britain, France and Russia, to defeat the Germans. But in World war Two (1939 – 1945), Italy first joined Hitler and Germany, with their leader Benito Mussolini. But in 1943, changed sides and joined the allies again this time including America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. In 1946 Italy became a Republic and in 1949 they joined NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and joined the European Union in 1958. And today it is one of the World’s most powerful countries especialy in the industrial side selling Textiles, Materials, Clothes, Food, Cars and Chemicals.
