By Mark on September 1, 2008

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is a very large country mostly made up with desert, which rises to mountains towards the south and falls away to a low plain in the east. It is a very hot and dry country and can be very windy as well, the ground of the country varies from rock and gravel to plain bare sand and very little is grown in Saudi Arabia, There are small parts of the country where you can grow some types of cultivation and cereals and that is around the Oases and the red sea coast.it is situated south to the Middle-East. With the Red sea to the left and the Gulf sea to the right and with Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq to the north and to the south Yemen, Omen and the United Arab Emirates. Over 80% of the population live within urban areas. In the north of the country is the Nafud desert (AN Nafud), and in the south is Rub’al Khali (the empty quarter), one of the world’s bleakest deserts.

Saudi Arabia was formed from territories assembled by the Saud family who were followers of the Wahhabism and the territories were proclaimed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The early years were very difficult as revenues started to fall due to the Muslim Pilgrims trade to Mecca and Medina declining. In 1933 an oil concession was awarded to a USA firm named Standard of California, who went on to export oil in 1938. By 1944 the American firm, went on to become the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO), and Saudi Arabia went on to become the largest oil producer’s in the world. Since 1953, Saudi Arabia has tried to modernize the oil industry, but at the same time still try and keep the oil industry traditional. The Saudi Arabian Prime Minister for petroleum and natural resources, Sheikh Ahmad Yemani, led the OPEC in being able to control prices during the 1970’s, and in 1982 King Fahd succeeded to the throne after the death of his half brother, Khalid. There have been many conflicts and controversial problems around the Middle-East and Saudi Arabia, often gets called in to sort out the problems, trying to make peace in the Middle-East. In 1989 a crisis in Lebanon was resolved by the Taif Accord. And in 1990, the USA sent troops to the country to protect their own interests in the oil and the country from the Gulf War.
After the Gulf War, King Fadh was put under pressure from his own people, with the pro-democracy and fundamentalists voicing their concerns about the King Fadh regime. By 1992, King Fadh decided to to created by royal decree Consultive Council. which compromised of about 60 members and every four years the King would choose 60 new members, and many discussions went on with the King denouncing the spread of Islamic fundamentalists and that democracy was not suited in the region. While growing international concern was about with the abuse of human rights and public executions.
Strains then occurred after the 11th September 2001, when a terrorist attack happened in America, as America said that some of the terrorists were Saudi nationals. In 2004 Saudi Arabia denounced the terrorist attacks on America and later that year the government in Riyadh was attacked, and that is when Saudi Arabia got involved trying to find AL Qaida suspects.

Saudi Arabia is a very rich nation and it has plenty of offerings and sights to see, of course it is a very hot country and women from foreign parts may still need to wear certain traditional clothing, not quite sure, please tell me if i am wrong. But there are lots of Hotels with lovely pools and bars as well as exciting shopping parades and many other site seeing monuments and mosques. So if you like the idea of going somewhere different go to Saudi Arabia, it does also have a western type of life as well as an Islamic type of life.

15 of the 19 alleged hijackers were Saudi Arabian, but I’m not aware of the U.S. invading or imposing any sanctions on Saudi Arabia. In fact, Saudi Arabia are U.S allies and got off completely scot-free. Instead, the U.S invaded Afghanistan. How many of the hijackers were Afghans? Zero.

    Make you wonder doesn’t it?
