The little Independant European country of Andorra

By Mark on October 27, 2008

This is a post about one of Europes most smallest countries. In area Andorra is 468 square kilometres or 181 square miles. The country is situated in the Pyrenees mountains between France in the north and Spain to the south, it has a landscape of valleys which is around 3,000 feet which rises to 9,600 feet. Andorra has a large river running through the country, it is the river Valira, which some how has managed to bisect Andorra into three different regions. The Valleys of Valira, north and south and the Gran Valira. Through out half of the year, but the mountains are often covered with snow, and that is why Andorra is a good place to go for skiing.

The history of Andorra begins in the year 803 AD, when according to traditional history, Charlemagne granted independance to the country of Andorra. the region became under power of counts of Urgel and subsequently the bishops of diocese of Urgel. During the 13th century, a dispute occured between the bishops and the counts heirs of France and Spain, consiquently leading Andorra to become a co-principality, which then put the country in the hands of the French and Spanish, with the French prince and a Spanish Prince. To where Andorra stayed a co-principality until 1993, when the country adopted a democratic constituion, which lead to the reduction of power by France and Spain. Making the president of France and the then Bishop of Urgel, become heads of states and that mean’t Andorra was able to have legally polititcal parties.

Tourism is a large part of Andorra and it keeps the country above water, it does appear that the country is more into Skiing, but banking is also a very important part of the economy. The other industries which are important for the country are commerce, forestry and the construction industry. But with the way the world is going there are concerns, I would have thought in the economy.

Interesting that, Mark. I only knew of Andorra by name and didn’t even know where it was!
