The state capital and largest city is Hobart, where the local government areas of City of Hobart, City of Glenorchy, City of Clarence and generally included is the satellite town of Kingston, part of the Municipality of Kingborough, into the Greater Hobart area. Other major population centres include Launceston in the north and Devonport and Burnie in the northwest.

Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, Hobart is Australia’s second oldest capital city after Sydney. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, and also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.

Launceston is a city in the north of Tasmania, Australia, with a population of 103,325 which is located at the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk, and Tamar rivers. It is the second largest city in Tasmania after the state capital Hobart.
Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities and is home to the largest selection of nineteenth century buildings in Australia. Like many Australian places, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom — in this case, Launceston, Cornwall. Information was provided by Wikipedia.
