On Saturday 29th May 2010, the musical event the Eurovision Contest was held in Oslo, Norway, Europe. It is a contest thatinvolves many of the European countries bit not all of them, for example there was no Andorra, Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy, were just some of the countries that did not take part. This years took place with two semi-finals of 17 countries with the top five countries from both semi-finals qualifying (10 countires) into the Final, which had 25 countries taking part, including the host country Norway, and the ‘Big Four’ main financial providing countries are France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, these five nations automatically go through to the final. Here is some information provided by Wikipedia on the List of countries in the Eurovision Song Contest. So this years winner came from the ‘Big Four’ it was Germany and ‘Satelite’, please watch Youtube video below.

This is the winner of the 2010 Euorvision Song Contest, it was Germany “Satellite”, and Lena.

So here is a brief history about the Eurovision Song Contest and in French it is Concours Eurovision de la Chanson, it is an annual competition which is held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). What happens is that each country is allowed to submit a song, which is to be sung live in front of a crowd and a live television audience, then the country is allowed to cast votes for other other countries songs, so that it leads to the winning song. Each of the European countries, has to beable to show the contest through one of their television stations, it is then down to them to select a singer and a song to represent their country in the international competition.

This was the Irish entry, that should have won, this song was sung by  Niamh Kavanagh and it was called  “It’s For You” .

This contest began back in 1956 and has become one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also a most-watched non-sporting event in the world, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 million and 600 million internationally. But considering that it is a contest only for European countries, it is shown around the world to some of the most well-known countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Uruguay and this is despite the fact that they do not compete.Since 2000, the Contest has also been broadcast over the Internet, with more than 74,000 people in almost 140 countries having watched the 2006 edition online.

This is a Youtube video of the United Kingdoms entry, Josh Dubovie “That Sounds Good to Me” What went wrong as it ended bottom.

So Lena won the Eurovision Song Contest, but I saw her scratching her head. Was this because she could not understand “imperialist” English :)

Can I ask anyone who supports the cultural identies of individual nations in the Eurovision Song Contest to vote here

The rules should also be changed to enable the introduction of the international language Esperanto.

The use of Esperanto is forbidden at the moment.
