The Christmas Robin, has flown on to Virtual-Tripping.

This is a post about the european robin bird which is associated with christmas, why is that, well back in victorian britain, the postmen used to wear a red uniform, and because of that they were nicknamed the “Robin”. So if you recieve a christmas card with a robin bird on, this an emblem of the postman delivering the card. The cards themselves arrived in the mid-19th century and this little bird has become a major symbol for christmas. But the robin is not just on cards, it can be a decoration on the christmas tree or a cuddly toy robin. There are many different types of stories about this tiny little bird, for example, did you know that in Norse mythology, the robin, was considered to be connected to storm-clouds, and was sacred to the norse god “Thor“, who was the god of thunder. Another story, is to do with Jesus, dying on the cross, the robin, flew down to him and started singing to him, to help ease his pain, the bird, ended up, getting blood on it’s breast and this is how the robin, ended up with a red breast, with the mark of Christ’s blood. But the other story is to say that the robin was scorched fetching water for souls in Purgatory. Also this bird has become famous for it’s appearance in the children’s tale, “Babes in the Wood“.
Finally i must say that it is good to know that this bird’s population is growing again, and it is also the national bird of U.K, which became known in the 1960′s. The Robin was used as a symbol of a Bird Protection Society.

The European Robin, which is mainly known in Anglophone Europe simply as the Robin, it is a small a small bird which mainly eats insects and was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family. but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher, which basically means it was around in the 15th century, and mainly prey’s on insects that fly. There is very little difference between the male and female robin in colouration, this bird has a orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish belly. You will find the robin in Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa; it is sedentary in most of its range except the far north. There are different types of robin, like the American robin which is a Thrush and the Australian red robin, which is closely related to the crows.
