The Caribbean Island of Jamaica.

By Mark on September 9, 2008

Jamaica is a small Island in the Caribbean, it lye’s south of Cuba and has a population estimated at 2,804,332 in July 2008. The Island is about 146 miles from west to east and 50 miles from north to south at her widest point, and Jamaica is the third largest Island in the Caribbean, and along the Island has limestone hills which rises to 7,400 feet in the blue mountains in the east. Streams flow from north to south, with the northern river actually being able to reach the coastline, which of course is a very beautiful sight to see, with palm-fringed beaches and very long sandy bays. The climate is tropical, but cooler and wetter on high ground. The temperature is hot and the rainfall is about 40 inches a year. Below are four pictures the first is of the Caribbean, the second is of Jamaica herself and the third is of the capital city of Jamaica, Kingston. The fourth picture is of the northern part of the capital city and it is a beautiful picture.

The economy of Jamaica is built up on tourism, agriculture, mining and light manufacturing. The main exports of the country are Bauxite, aluminum oxide, sugar and bananas. The main trading partner is the U.S.A. The economy was badly damaged in 1988, due to a hurricane, debt and outbreaks of criminal violence, but as the years have progressed the country has started to get back on her feet, with the help of foreign aid. The picture below is of the wonderful place of Montego Bay with it’s beautiful beaches and seas. The people living in Montego Bay are very lucky to have such beautiful scenary, it is just ashame, it is not a rich Island, with groups of people struggling to find work.

The history of Jamaica goes back to the times of Arawak Indians, who were the original inhabitants, In 1494, Christopher Coloumbus found Jamaica, by 1509 the Spanish had settled on the Island. In 1655 it was captured by the British and was made into a Buccaneer Base. And in the 18th century, Jamaica became a major player in the sugar industry, due to the then importing of slaves. But when slavery was stopped in 1834, Jamaica suffered badly and the sugar cane started to drop away. In 1865, a rebellion of black people, was then ruthlessly suppressed by the then governor Eyre. By 1866 Jamaica had become a crown colony and by 1884 representative government was formed.

By the 1930’s there was a widespread of rioting which was caused by racial tension and economic depression. In 1944, self government was granted, based on universal adult suffrage. The economic recovery started after world war two, and by 1958, Jamaica had become a founding member of the federation of the West Indies. When this collapsed the Jamaican Labour party (JLP), under William A Bustamante, went on to negotiate Independence as a Dominion of the Commonwealth of Nations. Much more events happened along the life side of Jamaica to which you can read more about on wikipedia.

I can now see why so many British people want to go to Jamaica, it has got to be one of the most beautiful looking Islands in the World. I hope that one day I will get the pleasure to visit the Island and to meet the people and see the scenery. Thanks for reading this post and I do hope that it wets your pallet and you would consider going their.
