The British Sovereign, The Rock of Gibraltar

By Mark on August 19, 2008

Gibraltar is a small country on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula at the eastern end of the strait of Gibraltar neighboring Spain between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean. It has been a British dependency since the British took Gibraltar in 1704 during the Spanish succession. And by 1713 it had ceded to Britain by the Treaty of Utrecht. Gibraltar consists of a fortified town and a military base at the foot of the rocky head. It is official to speak English or Spanish, since world war two the Spanish have been trying to take back Gibraltar saying that the country belongs to them, but the population of Gibraltar still want contacts with the British. And so that is why the small country is still in British hands. Gibraltar realizes alot on tourism to keep the country moving. And many British go to Gibraltar to get married, but also for stag and hen parties and other special occasions, the love for Gibraltar from the British increases close relationships between the two countries.

The Rock of Gibraltar which is sometimes known as the Pillar of Hercules or even by her Latin name of Calpe is a monolithic limestone promontory located in Gibraltar, off the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula.[2] It is 426 metres (1,396 feet) high. Alot of the Rock’s upper part is covered by a nature reserve which has around 250 Barbary Macaques, commonly known as ‘apes’; they are the only wild monkeys found in Europe. And with alot of different tunnels around the rock, this attracts a wide number of tourists. The Rock of Gibraltar was one of the Pillars of Hercules and was known to the Greeks as Mons Calpe, the other pillar being Mons Abyla or Jebel Musa on the African side of the Strait. In ancient times the two points marked the limit to the known world, a myth originally fostered by the Phoenicians. It was also known that 1848, Neanderthal man was discovered, but it was not until the discovery of the Neander Valley in 1857, that it was recognized as human remains. I believe one of the main reasons why people flock to the little country is because of the weather and also it is very close between Europe and Africa and alot of tourists visit Morocco on day trips. And as the weather in Britain has not been very good this summer, I would expect alot of British tourists to go to Gibraltar, there are bars and clubs, restaurants, wine bars, hotels, bed and breakfast rooms as well as swimming pools, museum’s, and a shopping area. A a very beautiful harbour. As I said earlier on in this blog, alot of tourists come to this country for very special occasions. So if you are looking for a rocking time go to Gibraltar.

The Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is a macaque with just a stub of a tail. Found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar, the Barbary Macaque is one of the best-known Old World monkey species. Besides humans, they are the only primates that live freely in Europe. Although the species is commonly referred to as the “Barbary Ape”, the Barbary Macaque is a true monkey, not an ape. Confusion as to the name could have arisen from the fact that apes are tailless. This monkey is yellowish-brown to grey with lighter undersides, growing to a maximum size of 75 cm (30 in) and 13 kg (29 lb). Its face is a dark pink and its tail is vestigial. The front limbs of this monkey are longer than its hind limbs. Females are somewhat smaller than males.
