The beautiful Balearic Island of Majorca

By Mark on July 28, 2008

Majorca is the largest of the three Balearic islands in the western mediterranean, off the central-Western coast of mainland Spain, and in between Ibiza and Menorca. The area of the island is about 3,640 sq km or 1,406 sq miles. The population of the island in 2006 was 790,763. The capital city is Palma situated central south-west of the island. The main industry for Majorca is tourism, but with beautiful blue sea and skies, golden sandy beaches, country and coastal scenes, historical scenes, shopping, watersports, hotels, b&b’s, theme parks and holiday inns, markets, restaurants, bars, clubs and disco’s, it is all cramped into this tiny island and what an island it is. When I visited Alcudia, I was so impressed, by what Majorca had to offer me, that I would always consider holiday there again.

Majorca has been inhabited since time can remember and there is proof that people were living on the island back in 6000 to 4000 BC. The island has been invaded many times, but the skeleton structure began with the Romans who occupied the island in 123 BC. It flourished under Roman rule, during which time the towns of Pollentia (Alcúdia), and Palmaria (Palma) were founded. In 534, Majorca was conquered by the Byzantine Empire, and became a part of Sardinia. Under Byzantine rule, Christianity flourished and numerous churches were built. In 902, the Caliphate of Cordoba conquered Majorca, the Caliphates brought prosperity and work to the island. Majorca came under rule by the Taifa of Denia, and from 1087–1114 was independant for many years. Then in 1114, an expedition of Pisans and Catalans took over the island making Palma their own for 8 months. Over the next years the island was attacked my North African tribes. King James I of Aragon launched an invasion with 15,000 men and 1,500 horses, annexing the island to his Crown of Aragon after a 3 month campaign. After the death of James I in 1276, his kingdom was divided between his sons. James II became king of the new Kingdom of Majorca. In 1344, King Peter IV of Aragon invaded, and re-incorporated the island into the Crown. Helped with by Wikipedia.

Mark, it always amazes me how much information you glean from a virtual trip in Google Earth. It’s almost as if you’re cheating and reading an encyclopedia! ;)

Have you physically been to Majorca before?
