Suriname, The Dutch Gem.
By Mark on March 9, 2009
This is a post about Suriname in the north-east of South America, situated between Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil to the south. Known for many years up until 1948 as Dutch Guiana. There was much conflict between the British and Dutch, but a treaty was made, and the British gave over Suriname for New York in 1815.
It is a very hot and wet place and has alot of forests and highlands, you will find that rice and sugar canes can be grown on the Suriname coasts.
Suriname is covered with history, the name Suriname comes from the old version of Surinen, which was named by the first inhabitants, before other South American Indians drove them out. The Spanish first owned the country in 1593, but in the early part of the 1600′s, the Dutch colonized the country.
