Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway

By Nick on July 14, 2008

A lesser known wonder of the world is Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway, an area of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. It looks anything but natural, but was apparently the result of a volcanic eruption in ancient times. Here’s an overhead shot of the Causeway Coast from Google Earth.

The Giant’s Causeway itself looks like this:

Pretty amazing, don’t you think? The site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, but that doesn’t stop you from actually climbing over the columns, some as high as 12 meters!

I love your write up as The Giant’s Causeway was one of the subjects covered in Geography with my class when I was teaching. We had someone come in and give us a talk about it and about the two giants story that goes with it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t this on a Led Zeppelin album cover? Absolutely brilliant.

    I love the site, guys!

Ah, Jordan! You tracked me over here for a virtual trip to Northern Ireland. Thanks for coming. :)

You’re right, Giant’s Causeway is on the cover of “Houses Of The Holy“. I think it looks a bit freaky, but it was nominated for a Grammy, so there you go!
