Match Fixing in Sports on Virtualtripping.com.
By Mark on September 1, 2010
Sadly nowadays it does not surprise me when I hear of match fixing on the news in sports, recently, we have the cricket match with the Pakistan cricket team, where at least 3 players were found to have been involved in match fixing, but at this moment in time, there are investigations and allegations still going on, so wether it is true or not we will find out soon. So what exactly is match fixing, well what it often is is a organized sport, where match fixing, game fixing, race fixing, or sports fixing occurs as a match is played to a completely or partially pre-determined result, so if one team is expected to win and they are the favourites, but they lose and lose badly, then it is quite likely that match fixing was involved, especially, if the team that wins, is a very poor team. But of cause, it does not always mean that, you can have in football goalkeepers, letting in goals on purpose, or in cricket bowlers or batsman playing badly or rugby players where they might fix injuries etc, they are all violating the rules of the game and often the law. Where the sporting competition in question is a race then the incident is referred to as race fixing. Games that are deliberately lost are sometimes called thrown games. You can also see fixing going on when a team intentionally loses a game, or they decide not score as high as they usually do, this would be to obtain a perceived future competitive advantage (for instance, earning a high draft pick) rather than gamblers being involved, the team is often said to have tanked the game instead of having thrown it. In pool hustling, tanking is known as dumping.

The sad thing about games that are thrown away or lost is that gambling can motivated teams to take more risks, but the problem with match fixing is that it will usually involve a few people for example contacts are required and normally money transfers take place between the gamblers, players, team officials, and/or referees. These contacts and transfer can sometimes be found, and lead to prosecution, by law or by the sports league. But what happens if an internal match fix or thrown match takes place, well this becomes much harder hard to prove. You see the substitutions that are made by the coach, are deliberately designed to increase the team’s chances of losing, what happens frequently is that key players or player will sit out, often using minimal or phantom injuries as a public excuse for doing this, rather than having the players play poorly, were cited as the main factor in cases where tanking has been alleged.

To me I find it very hard to understand, how these very well pay managers, coaches, directors and players, would even think of doing things like match fixing, but I suppose it does depend from where they come from, as for example the pakistan cricket players do get paid alot less than people relize, but does not give teams the right to control games with match fixing, just play as normal, enjoy yourselves and think how lucky you are compared to other people who do not or can not play sports and earn alot less than sporting legends and players. Please stop doing things like this as it is wrong and ruins peoples enjoyment in sport.
