Well this year is a special time for the residents of the United Kingdom and especially England, as it is about to host the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in London. And to mark this occasion, they have built a new Olympic Stadium, this will be the main centrepiece of the  Oylmpics and Paralympics. The stadium was built at Marshgate lane in Stratford in the Lower Lea Valley and there is a very large  capacity of approximately 80,000, and this makes the stadium making it the third largest stadium in Britain behind Wembley Stadium and Twickenham Stadium, for the moment. They started the Land preparation for the stadium in middle  of 2007, with the official construction start date on 22 May 2008, even though it appears that the piling work for the foundation had unofficially started four weeks ahead of that date. The stadium was finally completed on 29th March 2011. What is great news for the stadium and the English people is that the Stadium will also be hosting the 2017 World Championships in Athletics.

So as the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which is officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad or “London 2012 Olympic Games”, are getting closer, i thought it would be time to consider writing some posts and showing you where the Stadium is and other arenas, which will be hosting the events around the country. It all starts on the 27th July and finishes on the 12th August 2012. Now on top of this great event, it is a pleasure as an Englishman, to say, that London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, it also hosted the games in 1908 and in 1948.

So where did it all begin, well back on 7th November 2007, the design for the stadium appeared, the architect, Populous, are an architectural firm which specializies in the design of sports facilities and convention centres, and it also does planning of major special events. And as i have said above the construction of the stadium took four years from 2007 to 2011. This is a interesting stadium as it holds up to 80, 000 seats, but once the games have finished it will then be reduced to a 60,000 seated stadium permanently. The 80,000 seat’s will be there for the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events.  The stadium’s track and field arena has been made out of soft clay, which was  found on the site, and this area has now been made into a 25,000 permanent seated area. They were assembled, using concrete “rakers”. Due to a natural slope  of the land, the desginers decided to incorporate the slope into the design, with a warm-up and changing areas, and they then dug into a semi basement position at the lower end. Finally there has been a demountable lightweight steel and concrete upper tier which has been built up from this “bowl” and this will help have space for 55,000 spectators. Making the 80,000 seats, this will be an excellent stadium and games.
