Large Fire Consumes Universal Studios

By Nick on June 1, 2008

This story is breaking news as I write it, so I’ve just booted up Google Earth so I can see exactly where the fire is taking place. It seems a back lot at Universal Studios in Burbank, California, has been engulfed in flames and the King Kong studio is among the thick of it.

Universal Studios

Here’s a video clip (no sound) so you can see what’s going on…

There haven’t been any reports of injuries, and curiously enough the whole area is being sold off anyway, so perhaps it doesn’t matter very much? NBC Universal are moving their Burbank facilities to part of an 800 million dollar development in Universal City, expected to be completed by 2011. It makes you wonder whether the insurance from a fire of this magnitude might help to offset some of the costs… or perhaps it was just plain stupid building a movie studio out of wood and filming fires and explosions in it.

Amazing story nick, just goes to show that even in America you can still have serious disasters in public areas. But if it is being sold off then it wont be a problem now.
