I was watching a documentary about the thriller film knowm as ‘Jaws’, it was a final that was based on a novel written by Peter Benchchley, Directed by Steven Spielberg and Produced by David Brown and Richard D. Zanuck
Written by Screenplay: Peter Benchley, Carl Gottlieb, Howard Sackler uncredited, John Milius, uncredited ‘Indianapolis monologue’ and the Music was done by John Williams, Cinematography Bill Butler, Editing by Verna Fields and Distributed by Universal Pictures. The movie was released on June 20, 1975 (1975-06-20) and the length of the fim was 124 minutesand 130 minutes (TV Cut), it was made in the United States of America and the language is English. The budget for ‘Jaws’ was $9 million and gross revenue $470,653,000, this lead on to sequel films like Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D and Jaws The Revenge. So what is the movie about, well it idea was a massive idea at the time and there were many critic’s, saying that it may not work, and at times the film crew felt like it. ‘Jaws’ is a thriller film and it comes from the novel ‘Jaws’. It starts when a young lady decides to go for a swim and gets dragged into a furious fight with a shark, who goes on to kill, this sends a fear down the police chief. This story is based on on a fictional summer resort town, known as ‘Amity Island’. So has the police chief tries to protect beachgoers from a giant man-eating great white shark, he feels it is the right thing to close down the beaches, but as you would expect, there will always be someone trying to prevent the closures, this is the mayor, who is concerned that closing the beaches would have a massive effect on the town and would cause major havoc. So is only to be overruled by the town council, which wants the beach to remain open to draw a profit from tourists during the summer season. So after a few attacks, the police chief enlists the help of a marine biologist and a professional shark hunter. As you can imagine the story becomes very exciting and intense, who will win the fight ‘Jaws’ or the people. The stars of the show were, Roy Scheider stars as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as marine biologist Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the Mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brody’s wife, Ellen.

But when you think what actually happened and how the film may never has come into existances, it amazes me how well it went on to become. Jaws is regarded today as a watershed film in motion picture history, the father of the summer blockbuster film and one of the first “high concept” films. This is due to the film’s success in advance screenings, where the studio executives thought it would be a good idea distribute the film iin a much wider release than ever before, so many more cinema’s where showing the film, that average. This scenario went on to work with other movies like The Omen in the summer of 1976 and then Star Wars one year later in 1977, cementing the notion for movie studios to distribute their big-release action and adventure pictures (commonly referred to as tentpole pictures) during the summer. Jaws is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. It was number 48 on American Film Institute’s 100 Years… 100 Movies, a list of the greatest American films of all time, dropping down to number 56 on the 10 Year Anniversary list. It ranked second on a similar list for thrillers, 100 Years… 100 Thrills and was number one on Bravo’s list of The 100 Scariest Movie Moments. The film was followed by three sequels, none with the participation of Spielberg or Benchley. A video game titled Jaws Unleashed was produced in 2006. This has got to be one of my most favourite of films and I love to sing to myself, now and again the lyric’s of ‘Show me the way to go home‘.
