Euro 2008 Stadium in Google Earth

By Nick on June 14, 2008

Being half a world away in Japan and not least because England didn’t qualify, I haven’t been following the Euro 2008 football championships with quite the same passion as I used to. I have, however, gone for a little tour of the stadium in Google Earth, and thought I’d share some snapshots from my virtual trip to Austria and Switzerland.

Venues in Austria

This is the Salazburg’s Stadion Salzburg, home to Red Bull Salzburg with a capacity of 30,000, but this has been increased for the Euro finals.

The Stadion Tivoli Neu in Innsbruck is where FC Wacker Tirol play. This stadium can hold up to 30,000 people, too.

The stadium below is Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna. It was built in 1931 and has the capacity for around 50,00 people. This is one of the world’s greatest footballing stadiums and has hosted four European Cup finals. Naturally, it will be hosting the Euro 2008 final on June 29th.

This is a 3D construction in Google Earth of Worthersee Stadion. It sits upon a satellite image of a construction site. Of course, the real stadium is finished now and plays host to up to 32,000 FC Karnten fans in the city of Klagenfurt.

This next stadium, St. Jakob Park, is home to FC Basel in Basel City. It’s capacity has beenincreased to 42,500 from 33,000 for this competition.

Zurich’s Letzigrund Stadion is the new home of FC Zurich. It opened in late 2007 and has a capacity of 30,000.

Servette FC play their games here, at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva. This stadium, too, houses around 30,000 people on match days.

The BSC Young Boys play at Bern’s Stade de Suisse. The original stadium played host to the 1954 World Cup final, but was demolished in 2001 to be rebuilt in its present guise in 2005.

I hope you enjoyed that lightning tour of the competition’s stadia. Credit goes to The Stadium Guide for helping me find what I was looking for. For coverage of the tournament, head over to the BBC Euro 2008 page.

I thought that was a really good tour, I had no idea about the stadiums as I suppose more people would be more interested in the football rather than the stadiums. But it is amazing what your can learn. Plus learning of the names of different football teams aswell, excellent blog nick well done. Talking about the Euro 2008 Championships, what is going on Italy the World Champions thrashed 3-0 by Holland and drawing 1-1 with Romania. France losing 4-1 to Holland and drawing 0-0 with Romania. Germany losing 2-1 to Croatia and The European Champions Greece knocked out in the first round, Wow, what a competition, I think it may be a Spain vs Portugal final, lets not forget Germany though.
