ESPN(Entertainment Sports Programming Network), Sports Channel in U.K.
By Mark on August 15, 2010
This is a youtube video, promotional video done in 2009, of ESPN,UK. It now only shows 23 live English Premiership games and does show other sports, that are not shown in this video.
Over here in Great Britain, we have a massive sporting television company known as Sky Sports, officially the BBC Sports Company, is the mainstream sports channel the U.K, but as it is run on a licence fee basis, you will find that only main sporting events are shown like the horse racing, Grand National, the Olympics, the F.A Cup(football), etc etc, where as the pay per view channels are able to show pretty much whatever they can to a point. Sky have always been the dominent sporting channel over here like ESPN are in America and Setanta Sports are in Ireland, but a couple of years ago Setnta Sports tried to take on Sky Sports, but after just one year, it failed and Sky Sports carried on as usual, but Setantas failure became ESPN, UK’s, advantage as they decide to work with Sky Sports and have now got their own channels on Sky’s format. Working with Sky has made ESPN,UK, work very well as they are able to show English and Scottish football aswell as English rugby and other sports. My feelings towards Sky Sports is sadly still that Sky Sports will always dominate in this country, meaning that the only way to show live sports will be through the BBC, ITV and Sky. Which then goes on to mean that the other sports channels can not always show what they would like to show, for example, ESPN.UK, are working with Sky Sports, they show Scottish football, but none of the derby’s are on ESPN, they are all on Sky Sports, it is also the same with the English Premier football league, where Sky have taken most of the live games so there are only a few on ESPN.UK. Some people will say that is business, but I feel it is so wrong not to have real competition, as nothing apart from the BBC and even they are tighly budgeted, can they on Sky Sports. Sadly though that is life.
ESPN is a sports television channel in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland which is owned by American sports broadcaster ESPN Inc. The channel launched on 3 August 2009. Programming is available in standard definition and high definition formats. The channel was actually launched on 3 August 2009 as a result of ESPN’s acquisition of partial UK broadcast rights to the Premier League six weeks prior, caused in turn by the financial difficulties of Setanta Sports, which ceased broadcasting in Great Britain at about the same time. It marked ESPN’s first foray into live coverage of domestic sports events in the UK, which had previously been dominated by terrestrial networks such as the BBC and ITV, as well as pay services Sky Sports and Setanta. Prior to August 2009, ESPN’s only operations in the UK were archive sports channel ESPN Classic, as well as the pan-European ESPN America channel, which focuses on North American sport.
So was this the right thing to do, well yes it was in my eyes as I said above it then gives more opportunities to people around the U.K, to decide wether they can afford Sky Sports or a different sports channel. Of course it is probably still cheaper and better to have Sky Sports, but in time I feel that ESPN,UK, will get more and more live sport, for example on September 4th 2010, ESPN,UK, will be showing live coverage of the English Premier Rugby season, which will be good. But in today’s world there are so many channels you do not know what to watch, on top of that you have blue-ray and dvds, aswell as internet channels tv and radio, and recording on programs on large hardrives gives you plenty to watch to, oh my gosh, wow.
