The city of Edinburgh actually began as a fort named Castle Rock. But in the 7th century, it was caputured and taken over by the English, they went on to name the fort as Eiden’s burgh, burgh is an old word for fort. In the 10th century the scots managed to retake the fort and land and made it their own again. It lye’s close to the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. The city was actually created by a king named Malcom the third, who created a castle during the 11th century, the city grew around the castle, the castle was built on a rocky ridge, where the ‘Royal Mile’ links the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse which situated at the bottom of a ridge which passes through the burghs of Canongate and Edinburgh. Then in the 12th century Edinburgh flourished as the town grew. Up to the north of the city you have which is now known as the New Town, which was created around the 18th and 19th centuries. Prince’s street is renown for many international festivals and as been hosting these festivals from 1947.
