Dubai’s Incredible Palm Islands
By Nick on November 23, 2008
Take a virtual detour over the city of Dubai and you’ll see an incredible sight, two of the largest artificial islands in the world jutting out from the UAE coastline in the shape of giant palm trees.
The islands are theĀ Palm Jebel Ali on the left and the Palm Jumeirah on the right. A third, and even bigger island, the Palm Deira is also under construction and not yet visible in Google Earth. Between the three of them, they will add some 520 kilometers of beaches to the coastline, and host over 100 luxury hotels along with beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas (Wikipedia).
The third island was originally to have a surface area larger than the whole of Paris, but it has recently been downsized, but nevertheless impressive.
The first island, Palm Jumeirah, has already seen people move in, despite construction not yet complete. This aerial shot shows just how the islands will solve Dubai’s shortage of beaches, offering hotels and residence on the cleverly designed island. (Image credit: twocentsworth).
Despite the economic slowdown, Dubai continues to expand at frightening speed. What was once sandy desert has become an incredible image of towering skyscrapers and holiday resorts. You can be sure that Dubai will feature quite regularly here on Virtual Tripping as I explore the many record-breaking feats of construction Dubai is achieving.

Wow what do you say, it is extraordinary, how a country like Great Britain is going through a madness of a recession and a country like U.A.E can be so successful. It this rate the Arabian nations will become the richest in the world and may even one day over take if it has not already Europe. We have alot to learn from the Arabs, well done to them and hope it helps with their economic future. Top class report Nick ,well done.

I think Dubai is gearing up to bring in the Olympics to the Middle East for 2012 from London. Or else why would any country splash so exorbitantly on an opening ceremony. I think Dubai has started to believe that it has the financial muscle to stage the games in a better way compared to recession hit UK.

Maybe they were, but I heard Dubai has been ruled out because it’s too hot there during the Olympic time window. They wanted to host the Olympics later in the year when it’s a bit cooler, but that was refused because it clashes with other sporting seasons/events. They’ll have their turn one day, though.

People should realize that this luxurious beach-front property was built in the name of greed. Indians amd Pakistanis toiled under the blistering sun was only paid less than 200$ US to achieve this breathtaking wonder. It’s a modern slavery showcased on this magnificent landscape.
