Canterbury an historical roman city in England, U.K.

By Mark on August 17, 2009

I was thinking that writing these posts are fascinating and do show some interesting places, so why not write about a small historic city, named, Canterbury, a local government district of Kent, in South East England. It lies on the River Stour.
Now did you know that this city was originally a Brythonic settlement. But in the first century AD, the might Roman conquerors, took over the city and named it Durovernum Cantiacorum. In time this city became a cheif jutish settlement and this is where the English name, Canterbury became. The old English name for this city was called Cantwareburh (“Kent peole’s stronghold”).
After many years, Canterbury finally turned to Christianity in 597 and this is where St.Augustine an episcopal see in the city and became the first ever Archbishop of Canterbury. This is a position that now heads the Church of England and the Anglican Community.
Back in the year of 1170 a very famous Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered at Canterbury Cathedral, this then caused an uproar which then lead to the cathedral becoming a place of pilgrimage for Christians worldwide. If this had not happened there would not have been a pilgrimage, which in turn would not have inspired Geoffery Chaucer to create the story of the Canterbury Tales in the 14th century.
Like some of the other smaller cities in the British Isles, this city also had her city walls, which had been built by the Romans and then rebuilt again by in the 14th century. This has lead to many historical structures like St Augustine’s Abbey and a Norman castle, and perhaps the oldest school in England, The King’s School. To learn more please refer to Wikipedia.
