Canada, the Second Largest Country in the World
By Mark on June 17, 2008
Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia, but only has a population of around 32,268,000. You would think that Brazil, China and U.S.A would all be bigger, but there not. The reason why Canada is not so strong on the population front is because it is a cold country. Which is also quite mountainous. Meaning that are only certain areas of the country that people can live in, mainly on the southern borders of the country. Around the lakes of Erie, Ontario and in the River Valley of St.Lawrence. While in the north of the country lie the bleak Arctic islands where the population is low. In the winter the temperatures in the majority of the country are normally below freezing point, apart from the south-western coast of Canada where normally the temperatures are quite mild. This also means that as Canada is quite close to the Arctic circle or North pole that for several months of the year the country is normally cold. Canada is well known for the Rocky mountains and the Pacific ranges. In some parts of Canada, the country can expect very heavy rainful anything from 10 inches to 20 inches within a year and pretty much every year even though the Prairies often stay dry.

Canada is well known for it’s rich sources in food and materials such as wood from the large forests, and wheat aswell as fish and seafood from it’s Atlantic and Pacific coastlines. It is a major producer when it comes to nickel, uranium, copper, iron ore, zinc other minerals including oil and of course natural gas. And many manufacturing industries keep Canada going from Machinery to motor vechicles and oil through to timber, newsprint, paper and pulp. Canada has imports of up to 75% and exports of up to 85% all thanks to the to the free trade agreement with USA in 1989 and then the North America free trade with the USA in 1994.

Canada’s first ever people to arrive in the country were ancestors of the Native Americans or Indians from Asia over 40,000 years ago. Later arrivals to the country were the Inuits or Eskimos who also came from Asia. The first Europeans to come were Britain and France around 1497. They both rushed to get to the coastline to beat the other country and to take control of the territory. The French gained the initial advantage and created the city of Quebec in 1608. But the British managed in the end to gain control of Eastern Canada. in 1867, Britain passed the British North America Act which set up the Canada and this included Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, many other areas followed with Newfoundland being the last in 1949. Canada fought alongside the British in both of the world wars and very close connections have been made ever since. The British Monarchy is the head of state of Canada and the British and Canadians do get on quite well. My own opinion better than the British – USA relationship. Rivalries between French and English speaking Canadians still goes on. With the Quebeckans wanting a sovereign state, but the votes do not seem to be going well for the French speakers, and it will probably continue until one day they get their sovereign state who knows. Another situation are the Aboriginal minorities who want to have more say in running their own affairs. In 1999 the Canadian government decided to create a territory called Nunavut for the Inuit population in the north of the country. The new territory (Nunavut), covers approximately 64% of what used to be the eastern part of the Northwest Territories. Meaning that finally the Inuit people could now live their own lives, but still continue to help run Canada.
