Afghanistan – The Country

By Mark on June 14, 2008

I suppose writing a post about a country which is in the middle of a war, may seem strange and with the latest sad news that we have lost 100 British soldiers it could be hard to read. I have never been to Afghanistan, but I feel that I would like to write about this country, because what ever the media says, every country has its scenic points and this country has to so here we go.

What is it about Afghanistan that appears to attract war. When the country was first formed in 1747, by and number of tribes joining together, there appeared to be peace and Afghanistan after many years of tribal war was finally reunited and for sometime the country did well for herself. Until the British and Russians decided to move in and try to control the country. Many battles took place between the tribes, Russians and the British. Then there was peace again up until the British moved away in 1919, giving Afghanistan independence. For sixty years the country was just trying to survive, until the Russians invaded in 1979 due to a socialist regime in Kabul (capital). The Russians withdrew in 1989. By the early part of the 21st century, a group of Islamic students (to become the Taliban), controlled almost the whole of Afghanistan. After an apparent refusal of the Taliban government to hand over Osama Bin Landen to the international world, a force from around the world invaded the country, reportedly defeating the Taliban and seemingly forcing Osama Bin Laden to flee. In 2002 a coalition government was created and headed by Hamid Karzai, and in 2004 the government became recognized as an international government, but it was only a draft constitution. War is still going on in this country today.

Afghanistan is a landlocked country in central Asia, covered by mountains. The central highlands bordered by plains in the north and southwest of the country and also by the Hindu Kush mountains in the northeast. The climate is a very cold winter especially in the mountains and a very hot dry summer. Quite continental. Afghanistan is a very poor country with many of its people being farmers or herders. But the country is rich in natural gas, coal, copper, gold, precious stones and salt.

I just watched a movie about Afghanistan last night called “Charlie Wilson’s War.” It starred Tom Hanks and was about the aid the U.S. gave Afghanistan to defeat the Russians in the 80′s. Very interesting story and movie.

It’s all happening in Afghanistan at the moment and you have to wonder what will happen next, but I still like my post and think Afghanistan would be an interesting country to visit.

    Hey Mark,

Thanks for the blog, I like having a quick read of them because you seem to list all the important facts about a country, and thus saving me reading lots of unimportant facts and wasting my time! Keep up the good work!
