A tribute to Michael Jackson and his Neverland Ranch, Los Olivos, California, U.S.A.

By Mark on July 8, 2009

This is my tribute post to one of the world’s greatest entertainer’s and singer’s of all time Michael Jackson, of course really it does depend on what you actually thought of him and his music. There are still many fans today of Elvis Presley, Beatles, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown, Buddy Holly and many many more famous singers and entertainers. I do not have the time to write them all. But this post is also about Michael Jacksons famous Neverland Ranch in Los Olivos, California, U.S.A.

Neverland Valley Ranch formerly the Sycamore Valley Ranch is a developed property in Santa Barbara County, California, most famous for being a former home of American entertainer Michael Jackson from 1988 to 2005. It is named after Neverland, the fantasy island in the story of Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up. The ranch is located about five miles (8 km) north of unincorporated Los Olivos, and about eight miles (13 km) north of the town of Santa Ynez. The Santa Barbara County Assessor’s office says the ranch is approximately 2,676 acres (10.83 km2).
Jackson purchased the property from golf course entrepreneur William Bone in 1988 for a sum variously reported to be $16.5 to $30 million.
It was Jackson’s home and private amusement park and contained, among other things, a floral clock, a zoo and a theme park, with two railroads (one 36″ gauge with a steam locomotive (Crown 4-4-0, built 1973, with 4 coaches) and a 24″ gauge amusement ride-type), a ferris wheel, carousel, zipper, spider, sea dragon, wave swinger, super slide, dragon wagon kiddie roller coaster and bumper cars.

During his residency there, Jackson brought groups of children and their families to the facility as day visitors. He also hosted various children overnight, a practice which came under scrutiny when Jackson was accused of sexual misconduct with minors at the ranch, first in 1993 and again in 2003.
Jackson said in 2005 that he would not return to the property, saying he no longer considered the ranch a home, feeling the 70 police officers had “violated” it in their searches. In 2006 the facilities were closed and most of the staff dismissed, with a spokesperson stating that this was a reflection of the fact that Jackson no longer lived there.
Information provided by Wikipedia, as it is much more informative than my knowledge of the Neverland Ranch, to learn alot more about this extraordinary place, please refer to Wikipedia at the bottom of this post. Can I also say that these posts are Controversial, so if you have been offended by any of the above we apologise. But it is important to understand why Michael Jackson left his home at the Neverland Ranch. Hope you enjoy this post.

Good compilation of pictures of Neverland, Mark, but it’s a shame you had to sour the “tribute” by bringing up the child abuse accusations which he was found not guilty of.

Michael Jackson was the greatest, most accomplished entertainer of our generation, and should be remembered as such. Saying that, though, he was still just an entertainer and the blanket media coverage was unjustified. While Americans was preoccupied with Jackson, Congress passed the Cap and Trade bill, aka Crap and Tax bill, in a jaw-dropping example of how the American public put MTV ahead of things that might actually be important.

I do understand what you are saying and I have learn’t aswell that Michael Jackson was not guilty, but I wanted people to realize that it was not just his debt that made him leave neverland, it was also the child abuse scenario. He was an amazing artist and now people can see and understand what his life was like. Thanks for the comment Nick.

A great tribute, Mark. Jackson was never one of my favourite stars but he was unique in many ways and a brilliant performer. You have portrayed this well and I love the pictures. Well done.

It is an odd feeling when I feel sorry for the loss of a man I never met. He was a fantastic performer…..no-one can deny that.
Although I never met him, I feel that he was a nice, decent person. The love he showed his family and the effort he made around the world picture a man who had a good heart….and who sadly was mis-portrayed. I wish he could have realised it before it was too late for him….before he was manipulated. Those people have a lot to answer for. For his person, the world is grateful – he made a great impact and raised awareness to many issues. I hope over everything, he is remembered as a dad. One who cared aoout his children when so many out there aren’t. He tried to make his childrens lives as good as he could. I respect him and I respect his children. May they take solace in knowing their dad loved them.

    Annemarie.

Wow, what lovely comments, Annemarie, thank you very much for that. I myself wasn’t really a Michael Jackson fan, i have always been more into into Shakin Stevens. But he was a extraordinary entertainer. Many Thanks.
