104 Acre U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

By Nick on October 25, 2008

I missed the story of the U.S constructing a massive new embassy in Iraq when it did the rounds in the mainstream media in 2006, but there are reports now that construction is almost complete and staff are moving from their former “residence” at Saddam Hussein’s palace to the new embassy.

Just how big is the new embassy?

An embassy, in my experience, is usually a single building, so it made headlines when the U.S.A announced a huge 10-acre complex to be built in Beijing, which opened in early 2008.

Imagine then, the size of this new embassy in Iraq. At 104 acres, it’s almost the same size as the Vatican City (109 acres), and not much smaller than the world’s largest Disneyland (Paris, 140 acres). Let’s take a look from space…

I can’t imagine the residents of Baghdad being too pleased about such a huge, permanent foreign presence in their capital, but I’ll reserve judgment for the time being. Read more about the new embassy on Wikipedia, see pictures here and more here.

Haha, I think you’re mistaken, this is an embassy, not Abu Ghraib prison! :-D Though I share your desire to see Bush pay for his crimes. Saying that, Obama is currently continuing the war in Iraq and escalating the one in Afghanistan, not to mention bombing Pakistan, so that makes him just as bad as his buddy Bush. Lock ‘em both up!
